The Associated Press's Lauran Neergaard has been covering outbreaks of infectious diseases since 1991. She is currently spearheading the wire service's coverage of the swine flu crisis.
Neergaard, 40, is based in Washington D.C. Previously, she covered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from the AP's Atlanta bureau. She is a graduate of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Georgia.
Among other public health topics she has covered are the anthrax attacks, the crackdown on Big Tobacco and mad cow disease. She is married and has two daughters.
